WADI RUM, ANOTHER PLANET

Wadi Rum, as its name suggests, is a valley carved by the erosion of a river in the sandstone and granite rocks. It is located in the South of Jordan, 2 hours from Petra. This desert is known all over the world for its natural arches, its blazing mountains and its sand dunes varying between red, orange and yellow. Wadi Rum has 154 archaeological sites, more than 20,000 petroglyphs and inscriptions that trace the beginnings of alphabetic writing and which testify of the first occupation by the Nabatean people 120 centuries ago.

Also called “Valley of the Moon”, Wadi Rum became a protected area and in 2011 it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It is a masterpiece of nature and a unique desert. At first glance you will fall under its charm. Made famous thanks to Lawrence of Arabia, a British officer present in this desert during the Arab revolt at the beginning of the 20th century. During your visit you can find many sites tracing its history.

Wadi Rum is today an essential location for the shooting of cult movies such as:

Lawrence of Arabia in 1962

Alone on Mars 2015

Star Wars and Aladdin in 2019

Dunes in 2020

These landscapes are often compared to the planet Mars.

FAQ

YOU HAVE QUESTIONS ?

WE ANSWER IT.

WHAT IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT WADI RUM?

All year round you can enjoy Wadi Rum

The best months are March, April, May, September, October and November.

In summer, June, July and August, temperatures can reach 45°C.

The months of January and February are the coldest, with an average of 15°C to 20°C. But it hardly ever rains. The sun rises around 6:30 a.m. and sets around 5 p.m. Which can become an ideal season for some.

WHAT DOCUMENTS DO I NEED TO ENTER JORDAN?

You need a valid passport. The visa is required for the French. There are several ways to get it:

– Make a request to the embassy before your departure.

OR

– Get it on the spot directly at Queen Alia Airport in Amman. The visa costs 40 JOD approximately 55 euros (local currency only).

You can also get it locally at King Hussein Airport in Aqaba. The visa is free.

OR

– Buy a Jordan Pass before your arrival to benefit from a free entry visa as well as free access to 43 Jordanian tourist sites including Petra and Wadi Rum, provided you stay at least 3 nights in Jordan.

Jordan Pass prices depend on how many days you want to spend in Petra.

– 1 day in Petra: 70 JOD

– 2 days in Petra: 75 JOD

– 3 days in Petra: 80 JOD

For my part I think that the Jordan Pass is the best option because a visa costs 40 JOD and a day in Petra 50 JOD if you arrive at Amman airport. Here is the link: https://jordanpass.jo/Default.aspx

WHAT IS THE RIGHT OUTFIT FOR OUR ACTIVITIES ?

Summer: A comfortable and light outfit. Cover your head with a hat or scarf. Sun cream to prevent sunburn.

Winter: Warmer outfit. Provide a coat for the months of January, February and a waterproof jacket (if by chance you fall on rain).

Take shoes suitable for hiking.

Be careful, the red sand can discolor your shoes.

ARE THERE STILL BEDOUINS WHO LIVE IN THE DESERT?

Yes, most now live in the village for a matter of necessity, there is a small hospital and above all a school for children.

But there are still some Bedouins living there, but quite far in the desert.

If you are really interested and the weather permits, we can go visit them, they will be delighted to welcome you and it remains a magical experience.

In addition Khaled still has family living there.
